Addiction Treatment for Teenagers
Addiction reaches all levels of society. The rich, the poor, the old and the young. Sadly, teenage addiction is not fully understood by families, meaning that most people believe that teenagers do not have reasons to become addicted to drugs, alcohol, computers and other stimuli. It is exactly because of this belief that many teen children go undiagnosed and untreated for their addictions. In other cases, family members do not take the addictions seriously. Computer games are an excellent example. People feel that games are innocent enough, and since computers are generally used for learning and work purposes, it goes without saying that computer games are not a problem. Contrarily, adolescents who live their everyday lives through these games are addicted, and addiction treatment for teenagers does exist.
One of the keys to treating any addiction is identifying the underlying issues. In other words, ascertaining the cause of the addiction. For many teenagers, depression from a variety of sources is the basis for their addictive behaviors. During the adolescent years, peer pressures can be great, plus many teens do not feel like they fit in. They feel alone. Coupled with families that are busy and parents working long hours to survive, teenagers experience plenty of unhappiness, and little to hope for in some instances. Ostracized by their peers, they move into worlds of their own making, trying to fit, or just trying to feel better. The numbing effects of alcohol or the impersonal nature of a computer program or application seems to drown out existing feelings and problems. Indeed, addiction treatment for teenagers will try to isolate the negativity and help adolescents to overcome these issues.
Families often assume, also, that teens do not have access to substances that are addictive. They think about the illegal drugs such as cocaine and heroine, but cannot imagine or fathom their children being addicted to substances found in the home. Spray paint cans, glues and other inhalants are the drug of choice for not only those who live in poverty, but middle and upper class teenagers, as well. Everyday pain medications found in the medicine cabinet and prescription drugs prescribed for someone else in the home are perfect substitutes for illegal drugs. And, dependencies on any one of these substances not only require addiction treatment for teenagers, but also require immediate medical assistance due to the damage and degradation of body organs.
Once families recognize and acknowledge that teenagers do engage in destructive behaviors, then they are able to move forward and seek treatment. And there are several ways for qualified treatment centers to help teens. As each person is different and as their feelings vary, programs may vary as well. Some of the more successful treatment programs are:
- psychotherapy or other forms of counseling
- anger management seminars
- grief therapy
- family therapy where others are involved with the teenager
- trauma therapies for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and
- art and music therapies to provide a nurturing environment and creative outlet to express feelings.
Finally, addiction treatment for teenagers may start with an intervention, especially if the teen is unwilling to listen to reason and has spiraled out of control. Regardless of the stages of addiction, the treatment may include different levels of care such as hospitalization for both medical and psychological concerns, outpatient services or programs, and a combination of the two.
